The meter base is the customer-owned enclosure that holds the electricity meter and connects it with the property’s electrical service. While BC Hydro owns and maintains the meter itself, the condition of the meter base is the property owner’s responsibility.

The Meter and Meter Base Are Different Components
The electricity meter is the utility-owned device that measures how much power the property uses. The meter base, sometimes called a meter socket, is the customer-owned equipment mounted to the property that supports the meter and connects it with the electrical service.
When BC Hydro replaces an electricity meter, the existing meter base normally remains in place. If the base is damaged, deteriorated or unsuitable, the property owner is responsible for arranging the required electrical work.
